Getting started
Your switching checklist
One list of everything to bring over from your old app, set up again in TallyPip and check, that ticks itself as you go.
Moving from another bookkeeping app has a few parts: what you bring over, what you set up again (some things can't move between apps), and a few checks before you rely on the new books. Tools › [Switching checklist](/import/switching) keeps them in one list. Most items tick themselves as you go; you tick the rest.
While you're switching, Home shows the checklist's progress ("Switching to TallyPip, 9 of 16 done") and the next thing to do, until everything is done. Hide takes it off Home; the checklist stays in Tools, where Show it on Home again brings it back.
Bring your books over
- Chart of accounts and starting balances: ticks itself once your balances are in (Starting balances).
- Customers, vendors, products and services: ticks itself once you have customers and vendors (Import data), and says how many of each.
- Unpaid invoices, Unpaid bills, Credits not used yet, Open estimates and purchase orders, Inventory on hand: each ticks itself once it's brought over. If there weren't any (or you don't track inventory), tick None were unpaid, There weren't any or I don't track inventory.
- Past transactions (optional): ticks itself if you bring them over.
- Attachments (optional): ticks itself once you bring your old app's attachments over in Receipts (Bring attachments from your old app).
- Does it all add up?: ticks itself when Opening Balance Equity ends up what your old app had and unpaid invoices, bills and stock match their accounts. If your accountant has checked a difference and is happy with it, tick Mark done.
Set up again in TallyPip
These don't move between apps, so set each one up here:
- Connect your bank and card accounts: bank connections are made again in each app. Connect each account in Banking, or upload a statement; transactions from your start date come in (earlier ones are set aside, they're in the books you brought over).
- Sales tax: your agency, how often you file, and your rates (combined rates too) in Sales tax. Your rates can come over from your old app's Sales Tax Liability report or rates list with Import rates on Tax rates (how). Tick I don't charge sales tax if you don't.
- Recurring invoices, bills and expenses: import them from your old app's Recurring Template List with Import from another app in Recurring transactions (how); each starts after today, so nothing is sent twice. Ones it can't bring (every 2 weeks, journal entries…) you make again there by hand.
- Bank rules: import them from your old app's rules list with Import from another app in Rules. Tick I don't use rules if you don't.
- Your logo and how invoices look: in Settings › Sales.
- Invite your team and your accountant: in Manage users, each with the role they need. Tick It's just me if you work alone.
- Online payments (optional): if customers paid your invoices online in your old app, set up online payments again in Settings › Payments. The payments account itself is yours; it connects again here.
Check and finish
- Compare your reports with your old app: run the Balance Sheet on your start date (the day before, in your old app) and the Profit and Loss for a recent month or the year, in both apps. The totals should match. Then tick Mark done.
- Reconcile your first month in TallyPip: ticks itself after your first reconciliation here. Your accounts were marked reconciled up to the start, so it picks up where your old app left off.
- Close the books before your start date (optional): ticks itself once the books are closed through the day before your start date, with one click at the bottom of Starting balances (or in Close the books), so nothing in the months you brought over changes by mistake.
- Keep a copy of your old app's records: before you cancel your old app, export its main reports for every year you used it (Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss, General Ledger, and your customer and vendor lists) and download any attachments (receipts and documents) it lets you. Keep them with your records for as long as your accountant advises, often seven years. Then tick Mark done.
A tick can be undone with Undo next to it. Owners, admins and accountants can tick items; the list is the same for everyone in the business.
If something's not right
- An item won't tick itself: it looks at what's in your books. "Customers, vendors, products and services" needs at least one customer and one vendor; "Does it all add up?" needs your starting balances first. Open the item's link to see what's missing.
- I can't see the checklist: it's for owners, admins and accountants (people who can bring over balances). Ask the owner to change your role in Manage users.
- It's on Home but I'm not switching: press Hide on the card.
