Invoices and sales
Take a card payment over the phone
A customer reads you their card on the phone? Charge it right on the invoice, on Stripe's secure page. It's recorded on the invoice with Stripe's fee, and the customer gets a receipt.
When a customer wants to pay an invoice by card while you're talking to them, you can type their card in yourself. The money goes to your own Stripe account and TallyPip records it on the invoice, exactly like a payment they make with Pay.
Before you start
- Online payments are set up in Settings › Payments and Stripe says you're ready (how).
- You're an owner or admin of the business. Other team members don't see the button.
- The invoice has been sent and something is still owed.
- You have the customer's permission to charge their card for this amount.
Charge the card
- 1Open the invoice (Sales & Get Paid › Invoices) and press Charge a card.
- 2Check the amount and press Charge $…. Stripe's secure page opens.
- 3Under Card, type the card number, expiry date, security code (CVC), the name on the card and the ZIP or postal code the customer gives you. Don't use Apple Pay on that page: it would charge your own card.
- 4Press Pay. You come back to the invoice, which says The card was charged and the payment is recorded on this invoice.
The payment shows on the invoice as Card (by phone), with Stripe's fee, going into Stripe balance like every online payment; the payout to your bank is matched as usual. The customer gets a receipt by email ("Receipt: $… for invoice …") with the card's last four digits and a link to the invoice.
The card number goes to Stripe only. TallyPip never sees or keeps it, and neither should you: don't write it down.
If it doesn't go through
- Declined: Stripe says so on its page. Check the numbers with the customer, or try another card. Nothing is recorded until a payment goes through.
- The bank asks for a code or approval: that's the customer's bank wanting the customer themselves. It's rare for US and Canadian cards. Send them the invoice instead (Copy link under Online invoice) so they can pay with Pay.
- You closed Stripe's page by mistake: nothing was charged. Press Charge a card again.
- It says the card was charged but Stripe is finishing it: the payment is added to the invoice by itself within a few minutes.
Good to know
- It charges what's still owed on the invoice. For a part payment, turn on part payments (Settings › Payments › Payment options) and send the customer the online invoice, or record what they paid another way with Record a payment.
- Cards only (credit or debit). For a bank payment, send the customer the online invoice.
- An invoice in another currency is charged in it; Stripe converts it, and the payment is recorded at what reached your Stripe balance (Multicurrency).
- Refunds and disputes are handled in your Stripe Dashboard, as for any online payment (how).
- Stripe charges its usual fee; TallyPip adds nothing on top.
